Nitrofurantoin remains a reliable first-line agent for the empirical treatment of acute uncomplicated cvstitis.
Nitrofurantoin is also active against most strains of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacilli, including most extended spectrum B lactamase-producing strains.
Nitrofurantoin is also active against vancomycin-sensitive enterococci and vancomvcin-resistant enterococci.

DOSAGE
ACUTE URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS
ADULTS: 50-100mg four times a day with meals & at bedtime.
TO PREVENT RECURRENCES: 50-100mg per dav.
CHILDREN: Should be calculated on the basis of 5-7 mq/kg of body mass per 24 hours to be given in divided doses four times a day (contra-indicated for children under one month).
TO PREVENT RECURRENCES: 1mg/kg/day for long term therapy.
